New name, same WI
We are pleased to announce that our WI is now known at Balham Women's Institute, changing from Wandsworth Women's Institute.
8 years ago, our WI was founded as the first one in the London Borough of Wandsworth. From the beginning we have always met in Balham - though our members come from Balham, Tooting, Streatham, Battersea, Earlsfield and beyond! As the WI movement in South London has grown, our name became a bit confusing for both our community as well as prospective members who often assumed we were located closer to Wandsworth Town centre.
In light of that, at our Annual Meeting on Tuesday we had a lot of discussion and decided that the time was right to update our name to Balham WI. The vote passed strongly and we were then able to seek approval from Surrey Federation for the change. It was granted today and we are excited to move forward with a new identity, but the same heart. We still love culture, charity, craft, & cake, and we are still here for any women in from South London who would like to be a part (with membership opening up again in January).
Our social media links have updated and you can find those in the sidebar or the header bar of this site. This website address has been updated as well (if you're reading this, you know that!). We hope that our new name helps us better connect with our local community in Balham and beyond!
